Coastal Bottlers, Kenya - Phase 3

Bottling company embarks on energy efficiency drive

The Kenyan bottling company behind a series of clean energy upgrades at its manufacturing plant and head office is pressing ahead with a major energy efficiency retrofit after signing a new deal with Spark development partner, Safi Power.

Coastal Bottlers Ltd is already benefiting from two solar PV installations at its premises near Mombasa, after a 75kWp system was commissioned in 2020 followed by a 400kWp system in 2022. Between them, the installations are generating over 700MWh of renewable energy and avoiding over 400 tonnes of greenhouse gases a year, while also reducing the business's like-for-like electricity bills by around 25%.

The latest phase will see the implementation of multiple technologies, from energy efficient lighting and variable speed drives to motor replacements and thermal efficiency measures, to reduce the client's overall energy consumption and further reduce its costs and emissions.

The works will also enhance the reliability of the power supply through the integration of 55kWh of battery storage technology, as well as the integration of a PV-generator controller to enable Coastal Bottlers to maximise the use of the existing 475kWp rooftop solar PV, even in the absence of the grid.

Coastal Bottlers’ energy efficiency overhaul is the fourth project Spark has collaborated on with Nairobi-based Safi Power, and the second energy efficiency project funded through the platform, following Spark-funded works carried out at Brookhouse School in Nairobi by Energy Saving Solutions Limited.
